Centripetal Ireland: Empowering a Secure Digital Future for Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Centripetal Ireland marked Cybersecurity Awareness Month by hosting two impactful events at Platform 94’s newly opened Boardroom. The first event, “Pathways to Cyber,” engaged students from various disciplines, offering insights into personal journeys in cybersecurity. The second event, “Cyber Threats in the West: Trends in Cybersecurity,” brought together professionals and enthusiasts for in-depth discussions on the latest trends, challenges, and best practices in cybersecurity. These events aimed to educate and equip attendees, fostering awareness and empowerment in the ever-evolving realm of cybersecurity.

For professionals and cybersecurity enthusiasts in the business community who are eager to stay ahead of the dynamic threat landscape, Cyber Threats in the West: Trends in Cybersecurity was a very interesting event. We heard from Fergal Lyons from Centripetal Ireland and he highlighted some of the key components in cybersecurity awareness for businesses including robust passwords, software patching, and compliance regulations. Fergal stressed the importance of staying up to date with cyber best practices, and educated ius on the concept of passkeys as a modern alternative to traditional passwords. He also highlighted the value of intelligence powered cybersecurity and its proactive nature that enables teams to pivot away from the traditional detect and respond methods.

Sophisticated techniques targeting end users across various media are on the rise, catching them off guard, particularly over the Christmas period. The growing prevalence of non-email-based phishing attacks, such as vishing, smishing, and quishing, highlights the need for heightened awareness and cybersecurity measures. Centripetal Ireland provides valuable resources for readers this Christmas seeking a deeper understanding of social engineering risks and effective strategies to counteract them.

Platform Podium Series – Interview with Medscan 3D founder Jacqui O’Connor

In our new monthly Platform Podium Series we will be intervieiwng Founders/CEO’s from our member companies.

We’re delighted to kick off the first interview in the series with Jacqui O’Connor of Medscan 3D. When she established MedScan3D back in 2019, Jacqui O’Connor was on maternity leave for the second time in two years. Today, many important milestones and awards later, the 3D printing company services more than 40 medical groups with its models. “These models can also be used for educational purposes for the team and for the patient in question. Our models are not just for surgical planning, they are also used by research engineers to provide test models for their medical devices,” she explains.

“They can be made in a variety of materials for applications in medical device prototyping and testing. Customisable medical models to suit a specific area which will optimise their testing procedures at all stages of device development.”

With a background in chemistry and biomedical engineering, O’Connor has worked in various roles in healthcare, including as a technical manager in a nutraceutical start-up, a research assistant at University of Galway and a technical sales rep at an orthopaedic implant company.

James Wall, her husband and strategic adviser at MedScan3D, runs a 3D printing company which provides 3D printers, maintenance and support to medium and large-scale companies. According to Jacqui  developing the right testing model is of “utmost importance” for getting an implant to its most optimal stage, which, in turn, will provide the surgeon with the best device for treating the patient in question.

“MedScan3D streamlines what is normally a complicated process and provides a full turnkey solution, all in house. This provides a quick turnaround of customisable models with no 3D printing technology limitations – which meets the demands of fast-paced R&D teams,” she says.“Currently there is no other company that provides all aspects of medical scan conversion, [computer-aided] design adaptation and 3D printing of patient-specific models. We pride ourselves on our consultancy basis and providing an extension to the R&D team.”

The start-up, who are seeking to finalise its first private funding round in early 2024 , have been exporting its models to blue-chip companies based in high-tech markets such as North America, Israel and France.

O’Connor says the strategy is to sell through major and emerging players already established in the fast-growing field of medical simulation, and expand through current customers, while “exponentially increasing” the export market, especially in North America.

“Our vision is to foster a change in approach, where every healthcare professional can harness the power of 3D printing at the point of care, ensuring tailored and timely interventions that redefine the standard of patient care,” she says. “Together, we aim to build a healthier world, where innovation meets compassion, and patients receive the individualised care they deserve.”

Some of the key highlights from Medscan 3D’s year include

March 2023: Completion of the Innovation Partnership Programme with Irish Manufacturing Research, to allow us to receive the full IPP grant.

April 2023: Visiting Cleaveland under Mento means business to explore the USA market for expansion.
